About the Florida Keys Backcountry

The Florida Keys Backcountry..... Serene, tranquil, calm and clear water. Over 800 islands make up the Florida Keys from Miami to Key West and out toward the Dry Tortugas. Any time we are fishing in and around these islands we call it backcountry fishing also known as bay fishing. The Overseas Highway of US 1 heads off toward the South just off of Miami curving to the South West through Key Largo and Islamorada, by the time you reach Marathon the Overseas Highway is almost headed due west all the way to Key West. On the right side of this road lie the backcountry waters of the Florida Keys and Key West.

Learn More about Backcountry fishing

Fishing the backcountry is done in a couple ways. for a technical edge many anglers prefer flats fishing in the backcountry. For a fun day of fishing with 1 - 4 persons anglers chose backcountry fishing. Fast becoming the Florida Keys and Key West most popular fishing charter backcountry fishing opens up all the options to the anglers that chose it. Anything goes, whatever is in season your backcountry guide will show you all that is out there and how to catch it using light tackle spin fishing gear, bait casters and fly fishing gear.

Pioneered by flats fishing guides backcountry trips were started off here in the Florida Keys on flats boats and many still use flats boats today. As time progressed and the popularity of this type of fishing became more prevalent many fishing guides switched to bay boats to offer more room and versatility for a day fishing with 3 and 4 anglers. Heavier than flats boats bay boats needed trolling motors to get around silently. Most bay boat guides offer stealth trolling motor systems on their boats to get you closer to spooky fish and show you the best day possible. Some bay boats are even equipped with a head.

Your backcountry fishing guide is an expert fisherman himself and will be able to make the call as to what is best for your day and your group. Backcountry fishing guides are customer service oriented and know that one day it may be a group of 3 drinking buddies and the next a family of four with small children. Capable of catching fish for all with any experience level backcountry fishing guides may be the most versatile fishing guide in the Florida Keys.

Bonefishing charters in the backcountry can be done two ways, on a flats boat and on a bay boat. The bay boat is about the only way to get 3 or 4 persons flats fishing for bonefish.
